Sandy Beaches and Dunes
Beaches and Dunes are an important part of our environment. Beaches can be defined as "an accumulation of sediment-usually sand or gravel-that occupies a portion of the coast". Dunes are "an accumulation of wind-blown sand", however, coastal plants help stabilize the dunes. It is important to study these landforms because they serve as resources that need to be preserved and managed in order to sustain a healthy environment. Dunes and Beaches are environments that provide shelter to a variety of plants and animals. These environments are the most susceptible to erosion and pollution that could cause harm to many different plants and animals. Coastal Zone Management councils form plans to help control human impact and the environmental changes that negatively affect these landforms.
